B Dress and Appearance
- Uniform Regulations:
- Head Coverings: Head coverings are optional. If you choose to wear a head covering, it must be tasteful. Ninja headbands are acceptable.
- Upper Body: To signify membership in the signature Drill Dojo and to symbolize the unity of our community, drillers must wear the Drill Dojo competitor's t-shirt when performing. This shirt is issued as part of your registration.
- Lower Body: The lower body must be covered with long pants. For professionalism and safety, shorts are not permitted. Khaki pants are recommended. Jeans are permitted, as are other looser fitting gym attire options such as martial arts gi pants. Other suggested pants options include colored camouflage pants, slacks, etc. There is no uniform score, but there is overall impression. Dress to impress (and expect to be wearing a mandatory black/gold competitor's t-shirt).
- Shoes: Closed-toed and closed-heel shoes are required to compete. No flip-flops, sandals, or Crocs are permitted—even in sports mode.
- Accessories: Military-style accessories are acceptable, as are other "private dojo" or "team" logos. The final decision for what's allowed or not allowed will be made up to the moment of competition.
C Groups
- This event is unique in the sense that competitors are grouped by their relative skill level. For the 2026 event, there will be 4 divisions:
a. Orange + Red Sling — RED DIVISION b. Maroon Sling — MAROON DIVISION c. Green Sling — GREEN DIVISION d. Blue + Black Sling — CHAMPIONS DIVISION
- To ensure the competitive integrity of the event, judges may disqualify a competitor for "sandbagging" given a unanimous vote. This vote may be based on partial information, incomplete information, or total opinions—it does not matter. What matters is that the decision of the vote is final, and no refunds will be given.
- Competitors will be granted the opportunity to perform a live test-out at the event during muster. Tenure will be waived for live test outs.
- Competitors who are close to the next level but lacking in one or two tricks may voluntarily opt to attempt the harder group.
D Phase 1 — Description, Rules & Judging
- The first phase of competition is a complete test out of the sling.
- For the RED DIVISION, this will be 10 tricks from the Red Sling curriculum (even for Orange Sling drillers).
- For the MAROON DIVISION, this will be 10 tricks from the Maroon Sling curriculum.
- For the GREEN DIVISION, this will be 10 tricks from the Green Sling curriculum.
- For the CHAMPIONS DIVISION, this will be 10 tricks from the Blue Sling curriculum.
You will submit your chosen list of tricks at muster on the day of the event. This will include the 7 mandatory tricks and your choice of 3 "pick-three" tricks. Once submitted, the 10 chosen tricks cannot be changed.
- For this phase, there will be 4 judges, each tasked with observing one aspect of your drill.
Judge 1will only analyze your Hand Pins.Judge 2will only analyze your Rifle Precision.Judge 3will only analyze your Footwork.Judge 4will only analyze your Body Composition, including facial bearing.Dropped rifles will result in a score of 0 (minus 10) from the Rifle Precision judge. The other judges will continue to score you as normal, so it is in your best interest to maintain composure during drops.
- When it is your time to perform, the Drill Dojo Head Trainer (Adam Jeup) will call you to the stage. You will approach the center of the stage and execute a present arms maneuver. This present arms may be done according to any military manual or in a creative fashion of your choice. You should not give a verbal report-in. At this point, the Head Trainer will salute back, and the competitor will wait for a verbal announcement of your first trick.
- Each trick performed by the competitor will be done in isolation, i.e. the competitor will perform only one trick at a time. A trick is considered to be starting when the rifle begins to move, and a trick is considered to have ended once the competitor remains stationary for 3–5 seconds. Moving before the 5 seconds is up MAY be interpreted as a loss of balance and result in a deduction of points. Stick the landing.
- To prevent subjective interpretation, warm-up reps, such as throwing a double rising sun exit before heading into your triple rising sun exit, are not allowed.
- Advanced set-ups to gain momentum are allowed, but will be graded appropriately. If a competitor drops during the setup of the trick, they will receive a 0 score from the rifle precision judge and be given the opportunity to attempt the trick again, receiving a new score from each of the other judges based on their execution of the intended trick.
- After completing each trick, the competitor will wait until the head judge calls out the name of your next trick.
- At the conclusion of the 10th trick, the competitor will realign with the center of the stage and issue their present arms again. This position will be held until it is acknowledged by the Head Trainer. The competitor will then exit the stage. You should not give a verbal report-out, though dedications, thank-you's, and other kind, respectful words are allowed.
E Phase 2 — Description, Rules & Judging
- The second phase of competition is a freestyle solo event where the competitor will showcase the totality of their skills, including the performative nature of the art.
- For this phase, there will be 4 judges, each tasked with observing all aspects of your drill, including: Rifle Precision, Body Composure, Variety, and Difficulty. Each judge will also be given an Overall Impression score. These scores will be additive, meaning you are not being subject to deductions from mistakes (like test outs), but you are instead fighting for points by impressing the judges. All judges will be viewing your drill from the same audience-side of the stage.
- Standard drops will incur a penalty. What is considered a drop is subject to the sole interpretation of the Head Trainer, but it will constitute no less than a rifle that unintentionally touches the ground without any signal of clear and intentional control. As an example, if you miss a double rising sun (full ninja) catch and lift your leg so that the rifle is balanced at a 45-degree angle against your leg and the ground, this will be considered a drop. You may possibly avoid the penalty if you are able to signal (via a subjective interpretation of body composure) that this is an intentional position.
First Drop — Reattempt 5-point penalty IF you reattempt your dropped trick/segment. If you perform a smaller trick as a substitute or move on without reattempting, this drop is treated as a standard drop and incurs a full 25-point penalty.Subsequent Drops Drop forgiveness is applied only one time to a routine. Every drop moving forward will be considered a standard drop, including reattempted tricks.
- When it is your time to perform, the Head Trainer (Adam Jeup) will call you to the stage and introduce you to the audience. You will approach the center of the stage and execute a present arms maneuver. This present arms may be done according to any military manual or another creative fashion if you have developed a unique protocol for this respect. This present arms will be acknowledged by the Head Trainer of the Drill Dojo. You should not give a verbal report-in.
- Once your salute has been acknowledged, you may move to any part of the stage. Your routine will begin when the rifle executes its first maneuver. You should not give a verbal report-in or verbal report-out. Instead, you are to be evaluated solely on the quality of your drill.
- The minimum time limit for competition is 2:15 minutes. There is no maximum time limit for your drill. Competitors should focus solely on giving a performance that highlights the totality of their skills.
